SECRETARIAT,
by Allyssa Spur
This movie starts off with a normal family with Penny, her husband, and her four children, two boys, and two girls. The family is eating dinner when the mother answers a phone to find that her mother had just died. So she flies out from her home in Colorado to her Father's Thoroughbred farm.
Penny, (The mother) went to her Father's office and found a calender that was marked, 'coin toss'. This meant that every year, instead of paying stud fees, a rich man would do a coin toss between two mares and whoever won it got to pick one foal, and the other got the foal that was left.
Shortly after Penny's Father dies and shes presented with the challenge of selling the farm and horses because they have a big debt to pay. Penny decides to take the coin toss and after lots of time looking through stud books, they lose the coin toss, but she got the foal she wanted. She believed that the foal would inherit the speed of it's Father, and the endurance of it's Mother.
At home, Penny received the call that the foal was to be born and she brought her son to see the big horse, named Big Red be born.
Penny found a retired trainer to train Red for her and she had a stable boy that was a jockey. At the first race, Red left his rider in the mud. They decided he needed a confident jockey, and soon hired a better one that when he raced a horse, it's heart bursted.
At the next race the jockey kept the now named Secretariat at the back until the final stretch where they took off into first.
They went for another race at Saratoga when they got fourth, but found that the poor horse had something in his mouth that I CAN'T REMEMBER!
Next they went for triple crown, and won the first race, next came the second, and it was another win for Secretariat, and lastly they took off at an amazing speed. Everyone was raving and saying, "This horse can't keep this speed for a mile and a half!" But Secretariat sped ahead by so far, making a still unbeatable record.
~I loved this story also for the way they actually had the real Penny in the crouds and they pointed it out in perfect view at the end of the movie. Cool huh?
